Congress and Winter Conference Questions

Q How do I submit a workshop proposal for an ACA conference?

A To submit a workshop proposal for consideration in either the winter or summer program, you will need to complete Program Planning Form 1 (See Forms section) and submit it to Peg O'Brien by e-mail pobrien@aca.org, fax (703-224-0167), or mail - Attn: Professional Development Specialist, American Correctional Association, 206 North Washington Street. Suite 200, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Q Who determines whether my proposal is accepted or not?

A A Program Planning Committee or a Review Committee reviews all of the submitted proposals and determines which proposals are accepted into the final program. In reviewing each proposal, the committee considers some of the following factors:

Is the topic relevant to a cross section of correctional administrators, managers and line staff? Does the workshop proposal fit into the conference theme? Will the participants benefit by receiving information on best practices in the field and information that they can use back home?

Will the workshop present the issues from a variety of perspectives, i.e., adult prisons and jails, juvenile corrections and detention, community institutional and community-based programs?

Q Who can submit a workshop proposal?

A Anyone who has an interest in a specific workshop topic may submit a workshop proposal.

Q How can I receive continuing education units (CEUs) for attending an ACA conference?

A   Through an agreement with University of Maryland, ACA offers CEUs for attending specific workshops and events. When you register for the conference, you may also register to receive CEU credits. The registration staff will give you information about the attendance and reporting requirements. The CEU registration fee is $20.

Q How do I receive Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits and nursing Continuing Education (CE) contact hours for attending the ACA conference?

A   The Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division and the American Correctional Association are joint sponsors for the Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Education ( CME /CE) Program provided at ACA's Conferences.

The CME /CE Program is planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division is accredited by the ACCME to provide Continuing Medical Education ( CME ) for physicians and takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of the CME activity.  Physicians participating in the program can earn Category 1 CME credit towards the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Other correctional health care personnel will receive a certificate acknowledging their attendance at the ACCME approved workshops/sessions

The Nova Southeastern University Baccalaureate Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (NLNAC) 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006, 800-669-1656 . Correctional nurses can earn 1 ½ CE contact hours for each 1 ½ hour workshop they attend.
