ACA’s 2008
Winter Conference
Grapevine,
Texas, Jan. 11-16
ACA’s 2008 Winter
Conference is just around the corner. Specific information
about the conference was included in the December issue of
Corrections Today magazine and can also be found on
ACA’s Web site at
www.aca.org. Some first-rate keynote speakers have been
lined up to address attendees at our two major sessions:
Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., will speak at Monday’s General
Session I, and USA Today’s “Common Ground” columnists
Bob Beckel and Cal Thomas, will speak at Tuesday’s General
Session II – Luncheon.
At this
conference, the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections
will be reviewing 221 agencies for possible accreditation.
These programs and agencies have worked hard to attain this
achievement. We thank them for their participation and wish
them luck in the process.
There will be
exciting events in Grapevine devoted to Healthcare
Professional Interest Section members and other health care
professionals, including a welcome reception; a special
session featuring an address by Dr. Terry Cline, the
administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Services
Administration; and a dedicated track of health care
workshops.
Approximately 90
educational opportunities are planned to support the theme
“Work Force: Heart of Corrections.” If you have any
questions, e-mail
grapevine08@aca.org. It is never too late to make
last-minute plans to join us. We would enjoy seeing you
there and know that you would benefit from joining us.
Coalition
for Correctional Health Authorities
The Coalition for Correctional Health Authorities (CCHA)
conducted its first symposium Nov. 28-30 in Alexandria, Va.
The symposium provided a unique opportunity for networking,
information-sharing and group discussions. The attendees
heard presentations from various speakers, including keynote
addresses by Rear Adm. Kenneth Moritsugu, U.S. Public Health
Service (retired); Harley Lappin, director of the
Federal Bureau of Prisons; and Patricia Caruso, director of
the Michigan Department of Corrections. We want to thank
Harley Lappin and Morris Thigpen, director of the National
Institute of Corrections, for believing in the importance of
this effort and for helping ACA in our initial
ground-breaking effort to continue to meld treatment and
security in professional corrections.
Executive
Committee Fall Meeting
The Executive Committee meeting was held on Nov. 30 in
Alexandria, Va., in conjunction with the CCHA Symposium. The
meeting was very productive and the symposium was a great
success.
Thank you to all our members for your continued support and
